On the Seventeenth day of August year 2014, the curious and passionate Communication students of Sacred Heart College participated in the most awaited “11th EdukCircle Convention Media Communication.” The EdukCircle –International Communication studies commits to promote and share the outstanding communication strengths of the Filipinos in the fields of news and entertainment on Philippine Television.

With the theme, “Media and Politics: Reporting Philippines Recent Political Scandals,” this year’s convention brought in almost 2,000 communication students from various colleges and universities across the country, to learn and gain insights regarding political controversies from two distinguished guest speakers such as Dr. Clarita Carlos, professor of political science at the University of the Philippines Diliman, and Ms. Nancy Carvajal, senior reporter of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Both respected in their own fields, they shared their opinions on the Priority Development Assistance Funds (PDAF) and the Disbursement Acceleration Program.

Dr. Carlos emphasized that for a news reporter to write substantial stories, she/he must be knowledgeable about the issue before she can write. To this, she emphasized the value of research, observation and reading in news reporting. She also informed the students about the ASEAN integration that will take effect soon. Hence, she encouraged the students to be more knowledgeable about the happenings in the country and around the globe.

Meanwhile, Ms. Carvajal shared her extraordinary experience of exposing the bogus companies of Janet Lim Napoles with some senators and congressmen, and the truth behind the PDAF scandal. During her sharing, one student asked Ms. Carvajal that if she would uncover a delicate issue to the public that puts her life on the line, would she still do it. Ms. Carvajal, unthreatened by the question, simply said that it is the duty of the journalists to seek the truth to provide the public a fair and comprehensive report. She emphasized that it is important to serve the public with thoroughness and honesty.
