Vincentian Mission in Anislag

As an offshoot of the recent Vincentian Spirituality for Cordian Leaders held last September 6, 2008 , student leaders were invited to join and be part of the Vincentian Mission at Anislag, an exposure immersion activity. Many would wonder why at Anislag?

Looking back two years ago when typhoon Reming hit the Bicol region, thousands of families were greatly affected. Many have lost their loved ones, their homes and their means of living. One of the most affected barangay was Malobago, located at the foot of the Mayon volcano. The Malobago residents nearing to three hundred families were housed in a small classrooms of Tabontabon Elementary School . You can imagine how crowded these families in a classroom were.

The families were relocated and temporarily housed in tents at Anislag by Summer 2007 since the classrooms in Tabontabon Elementary School were used for the 2007 National and Local Elections.

The Congregation of the Daughter of Charity moved by the immense love for the poor, together with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and the Association of Major Religious Superiors, built three hundred thirty houses for the residents of Barangay Malobago in Anislag and named it the Vincentian Family Village.

Last October 27 to November 1, 2008, nine volunteers - three faculty and six student leaders - joined the Vincentian Mission at Anislag. Upon arrival at Anislag (28th October), the volunteers were oriented by the social worker and introduced to their foster families. Each volunteer was given a family to be with during the immersion where one assisted in the household chores, took care of the kids and others helped in selling, farming, feeding the pigs, etc.

During the afternoons of their immersion, the volunteers convened at the raw house to teach the little children who were included in the community feeding program with songs of praise. On the third afternoon ( 30th October) , they narrated the story of our dear patron saint, St. Vincent de Paul to the little children

The residents and some of the volunteers braved the heavy rains with lightning and thunderstorms as they joined the dawn Rosary held last October 31 at the prayer area of the village. As the volunteers bid goodbye to their foster families, they gave them an image of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus as gesture of their gratitude for allowing them to be part of their families and for teaching them so many great things in life- the value of simplicity, perseverance, strong faith and confidence in God’s providence.

The volunteers had their integration, a sharing of their life experiences and reflection, at the Bethlehem Retreat House in Bacacay, Tabaco, Albay with the Mr. Jun Cruzat, Coordinator, Christian and Vincentian Formation. Much to their delight, they were given a surprise treat- swimming at Bacacay Beach, an opportunity to bond and reminisce their experiences.
