SHC conducts Gas Leak Drill
By Julius Anthony M. Cada, News Editor- The Heart Publication
Just before the gas leak in Makati, Sacred Heart College has already prepared for it.
Sacred Heart College, a ‘Gawad Kalasag’ awardee for disaster preparedness initiated an institutional Gas Leak Drill at the HED Science Laboratory, July 29, 2010.
This year, from fire and earthquake drills, SHC was affected by a gas leak at the HED Science Lab 1 with 45 first year BS Nursing students, a teacher and a Marillac Grantee as casualties. The bell and sirens rang at 3:00 in the afternoon to signal that there was an emergency and to call all students and personnel to go to their safe stations while the incident is occurring. Incident Commander Engr. Gerardo Navela called up the fire department for immediate rescue of the victims and took control of all the units until after SHC was declared safe.
The rescuers came from the fire department, personnel and BSN students. The Committee on Health and Safety headed by Engr. Elda C. Aranilla and its subcommittee heads on Site Security of Mr. Matias Soriano; Evacuation Team of Dr. Luzviminda Calzado and Mrs. Amy Vargas; First Aid of Mrs. Leticia Hernandez; Rescue Team of Mr. Billie Tolentino with the assistance of NSTP students and Communication Team of Mr. Lloyd Alzola led for the realization of the activity.
Continuous training
Engr. Aranilla said that the institution has a big responsibility in continuously training the students and personnel for disaster preparedness and management. “The yearly drill helps the students and personnel achieve higher awareness, preparedness and alertness in greater disasters to occur,” she explained.
Impressed
The Health and Safety Head conceptualized the drill even before the reported hazardous gas leak in Makati with reference to her letter to Fire Department Chief inspector Edwin Vargas on July 8. She noted that the Task Force Lucena headed by Col. Narciso Alamag was “very impressed” because every year there is a different form of disaster that SHC has in mind, speaking to personnel and students together with guest officers from the Fire Department , Philippine National Police and Lucena City Disaster Coordinating Council in the evaluation after the drill. SHC is graced by the support of the city government in pursuing its commitment to disaster preparedness and promotion of the health and safety of its students and personnel.
