SHC-JFINEX joins Philippine Financial Summit 2018

In celebration of investment month seven Cordians major in Finance join the Philippine Financial Summit last April 21, 2018 at SMX Convention Center Manila. The Philippine Financial Summit (PFS) 2018, is a series of talks geared towards promoting nation building and financial literacy. The Cordians annually attend this event in order to create change that will genuinely inspire and empower people to work towards the goal of financial inclusivity. The summit also help in providing students and young professionals from all backgrounds the necessary tools they need to unlock finance literacy.

The opening remarks was given by the Chief Executive Officer of UP Junior Finance Association, Mr. Lowell Tiu wherein he reiterated the importance of finance in the economy. The first speaker is Mr. Eduardo Francisco who is the head and President of the BDO Capital and Investment Corporation. He took his MBA in Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and an expert in investment banking. He shared his dream to be in finance since he was a child. Mr. Francisco also mentioned that an MBA may help in getting connections and hurdling the CFA exam will give way for more opportunities in the finance industry. The Second Speaker is Mr. Arrey Perez, the Vice President for Business Development at Bases Conversion and Development Authority. He discussed the need to decentralize Metro Manila due to wide spread pollution and unclean surroundings. He said Clark and Subic being under the Bases Conversion and Development Authority teamed up with NEDA, DBM, DOF, DPWH and DOTr to build a city that can be a new business center to be name as New Clark City. He said that in building the New Clark City, it will create a room for Metro Manila to breathe and grow. Inside it will be a sports complex with 20,000 seating capacity capable of holding future international games such as the Olympic Games. In terms of transportation, New Clark City will include a faster railway system and a backup disaster risk recovery center.

The Finance Cordians were thankful on the opportunity in learning more how finance can be applied in their own lives and in promoting the importance of finance in other people’s life.

After the second speaker shared his time and expertise, the program proper was followed by the plenary session in which the panelist talked about the Financial inclusivity in the Philippines. The panelists are the following. Mr. Conrado Bate, the President and Chief Executive Officer of COL Financial Group, Inc. Ms. Darlene Berberabe, the Former President and Chief Executive Officer of Pag-IBIG Fund. Mr. Jonathan Ravelas, the first Vice President and Chief Market Strategist of BDO Unibank and Atty. Agnes Joyce Bailen, the Undersecretary for Internal Audit of the Department of Budget and Management. They pointed out the access of wide range of financial products and the access to different products and services such as insurance and finances. Mr. Jonathan Ravelas cited that the Philippine economy started to grow by 5% in the last 15 years. He also mentioned the technology and the role of financial inclusion. In 10 people, there are only 4 people who has a savings account. In addition to the projects of government. They answered the questions about the free tuition fee for State Universities and College’s students. Mr. Ravelas, the Chief Market Strategist of BDO Unibank told that everyone must participate in the financial literacy seminars. He also said that people must start building their emergency reserves and create investments since close to 63% of population go broke and only 10% is investing in stock market. While in the issue of e-payment, only 1% of all payments are done electronically and in 2020 they look forward that there will be a 20% increase in using electronic payments. This is something that they look forward in the future for the reason that many would benefit if people maximize the use of e-payment. After the plenary session, the organizing committee allotted a one-hour lunch break to be able to set up the break-out rooms wherein the function hall was divided into three sessions where the first session tackled the financial technology. The second session tackled the financial investing and the last session tackled the financial career in the industry.

The first speaker for the financial technology is Mr. Nichel Gaba, he is the Chief Executive Officer of Philippine Digital Asset Exchange. He quoted this line for individuals that "Currency can only be valued by what you can exchange it for. The 50 pesos bill itself has little value outside the Philippines.”

The second and last speaker for the financial technology session is Mr. Paolo Azzola, he is the chief operating officer and the managing director of Paymaya Philippines. He pointed out the changes happened in the world from decades ago up to the present day wherein the technology makes the world go differ from the usual and that technology made people innovate something that will ease the lifestyle of every individuals.

While the first speaker for the financial investing session is Mr. Dino Macasaet. He is the head of Product Management and Development of Sun life Asset Management Company, Inc. In his talk, he gave the steps on how to achieve the financial goals in life such as Set goals, make plans, get to work, stick to it, and reach those goals. There are 3 concepts that every individual must consider to have a brighter life in the future. First to consider is saving. This is the first step of your financial journey. Second, Inflation and last is investing. Making your money work hard for you. In the last part of his talk, he gave an advice to all that in our young age, we must now start investing to be able to prepare something bigger for our future. The second speaker was Mr. Marvin Fausto. He is the President of IFE Management Advisers, Inc. He briefly discussed the Portfolio Executive he did before in terms of Strategic and Tactical strategy wherein Strategic is a long-term strategy and Tactical is a short-term use, technical analysis, charts, pattern, formations, and Fibonacci numbers. He gave the things that people don’t usually see. First, Investing is an art rather than science. It is not fundamentally based all the time, it is more of an art. Second, 2 things you manage. You manage portfolio and client. In client you manage their expectation, you manage the risk. For portfolio you manage your money either in equity, fund, bonds. Third, to outperform the market you need to talk to anybody, read newspaper, watch tv, watch CNN and Bloomberg. So that you know what earth is doing. Fourth, Visit company management. Understand what they trying to say rather than what they trying to report. Fifth, Focus on a trend. “trend is your friend”. Sixth, maintain a mix of 3 and 4. Seventh, sell your losers, hold on your winners. Eight, always think what you do wrong and its consequences. Ninth, Take control your biases. Lastly, understand yourself, understand your limbic system. He ended his talk by quoting this line of himself “All of us have a gift. And I think your job that’s why you’re here is to look for your gift. Understand what the lord gave you. Some of us find out early in life, some find out later in life, some do not find it at all and that’s painful. That’s why you really need to look for your gift, try to own it and make it a talent. And that talent made you different from each and everyone in this world and that talent determine your role and purpose in life. Do anything that you can and make this world a better place”.

The first speaker for the last session in the afternoon was Ms. Giovanna Vera, CFA. She is the Corporate Finance, Investor Relations, & Treasury at the Century Pacific Group of Companies. Her talk mainly focused on the Life as a public company. As an investor relations officer of the Century Pacific Group of Companies, part of her work is to travel to different countries around the world to meet different nationalities that will invest in their company and as an investor itself, she shared her knowledge and ideas about the behavior that every individual must inculcate when it comes to investing more specifically in the stock market. As a conclusion to her talk, she briefly mentioned that when someone wants to be an investor relations officer, one must have a solid finance background in terms of numbers and strategy, good communication skills and most importantly a work experience.

The last and ending speaker is Mr. Deanno Basas, he is the President and Managing Director of the ATR Asset Management Company. He is a graduate of University of the Philippines. He worked in Hongkong, London, and New York. He has two roles in the company, being the President of ATR Asset Management Company and a fund manager wherein he focused on bonds and multi assets. He briefly discussed the work of a fund manager whereas he shared the 3I’s that makes up a fund manager such as the Intelligence, Integrity, and Intensity. Alongside with his career track, he gave the 5 things that individuals need to develop when they are dealing with finance. First and foremost, Give attention to detail. Second, See the big picture. Third, Use your imagination. Fourth, Have a common sense. Last but not the least, Have interest. In addition to his career, he explained what does fund management in the Philippines look like. According to him, the best time to start investing is now since our economy is growing and there is the rise of machinery. He concluded his talk by quoting these phrases “Help spread the world”. The whole day event was ended by giving of the token of appreciation to the notable speakers that shared their time and expertise to make the event a success.
