Hearing the loud emergency bell and the sirens, students from the Integrated Basic Education Department (IBED) and the Higher Education Department (HED) as well as the administrators and employees of Sacred Heart College (SHC) rushed to the SHC Grounds. This signified SHC’s preparedness in times of emergency and disaster.

SHC conducted its annual Earthquake and Fire Drill last July 28, 2016. The sound of the emergency bell and siren signaled the beginning of the Fire and Earthquake Drill in the campus. Initiated and supervised by the Disaster Management Coordinator, Engr. Elda Aranilla, all members of the SHC community took part in the three-hour simulation exercise.

Selected students from the College of Psychology, Teacher Education and the College of Nursing served as the medical team with the proper guidance of their clinical instructors. Other students from both the IBED and HED acted as casualties who were rescued and given proper medical attention.

The Earthquake and Fire Drill 2016 was made possible through SHC’s collaboration with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and Lucena City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (LDRRMC) for the technical assistance, and the local government officials of Lucena, particularly officials of Barangay 2 and 11, for the additional manpower for the implementation of the drill.

Now on its 13 years of conducting the Earthquake and Fire Drill, SHC has shown its preparedness when disaster strikes. It is ready with the protective equipment and paraphernalia (e.g., fire extinguishers, boots, helmet, medical needs) as well as Cordians’ appropriate knowledge, attitude and practice in terms of earthquake and fire.
