In this year’s 4th Philippine Conference on New Evangelization, more than 6,000 delegates composing of priests, students, lay missionaries, youth, catechists, religious sisters from different congregations and members of different organizations attended the three-day event at Quadricentennial Pavillion, University of Sto. Tomas, Manila held last July 28-30, 2017. Among the participants, 30 of them are students and personnel of Sacred Heart College, Lucena City.

Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, D.D. led the opening mass on the first day (July 28), and during his homily, he give emphasis on the celebration of the Year of the Parish as Communion of Communities as implied in the theme of PCNE 4: “Of One Heart and Soul (Acts 4:32)”. He mentioned about the need of participation of the Church in God’s mission, sharing one heart and soul as a community living in peace and harmony.

UST Professor, Jovana Fontanilla read the welcome message of Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, UST Rector Magnificus while Fr. Jason H. Laguerta, PCNE Director gave the overview of the conference. As the theme of Day 1 was “Heart Encounters”, a “Heart to Heart Talk” was presided by Cardinal Tagle. Invited guests were Mr. Dingdong Dantes, Mr. Alden Richards, Mrs. Dimple Romano, Sr. Mary Jane C. Capillo MMS, and Bro. Rodito Mahinay. They open their hearts as they’ve shared their faith-life experiences as a witness to communion with God.

In the afternoon, a plenary session was facilitated by Ms. Delia Dalisay, the Philippines Co-Director of Focolare Movement. The topic was about the “Communion in and with Jesus”. The first Concurrent Sessions with different tracks (Cathechist, Ecology/Environment, Family, Interreligious/Intercultural/Ecumenical, New Media and Evangelization, New Movements, Parish/BEC, School, Social Justice and Youth) were simultaneously done to deepen more the theme of the first day encounter with the Lord. It ended with a community prayer through a Taize Prayer.

Second day’s Eucharistic Celebration was presided by Most Rev. Bernardito C. Auza, Apostolic Nuncio, the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations. The theme of Day 2: “Making Room”, focused on the challenges that the Church is facing today. A Plenary Session with the topic, “Being Christian in the Age of Global Difference” was tackled by Most Rev. Salvatore Rino Fisichella, the President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization. He talked about the importance of 3 Pillars (Prayer, Sharing, and Mission) in a Christian’s life, who are called for commitment and not for pastime.

The panel presentation with a topic: “Witnessing to Community” was the sharing of experiences of Richardson Da Silva, Sisters of Mary Girlstown, Dr. Carmi Ngan-oy and Ms. Marissa Amor Liquigan, who had made a room in their hearts to change the life of many people. The presentation was followed with the 2nd and 3rd Concurrent Sessions in the afternoon. The second day was ended with a community praying the Holy Rosary in honor of Our Lady of Fatima.

The last day of the conference with a theme: “Embracing Mission” tackled the prime responsibility of Christians as disciples of Christ. “The Role of the Church in the Community of Nations”, as the topic of the last plenary session was tackled by Most Rev. Bernardito C. Auza, Apostolic Nuncio. He gave emphasis on the accountability of each one to the mission that Christ sent us after the Pentecost.

Panel Presentors of the topic “Witnessing to Mission” were Ms. Bai Rohaniza “Honey” Sumdad-Usman, Ms. Clarissa Isabelle Delgado, Mr. Ruel and Mrs. Mary Anne Aguirre, and Mr. Ernie Abringue. They’ve shared their experiences as missionaries who journeyed miles of distances just to proclaim the good news of God. They’ve fought for peace and equality amongst diversity. And according to them, as what they were doing implied dangers in their lives, it no longer matters to them for it is not their mission, but the Lord’s.

Cardinal Tagle gave the synthesis of the PCNE 4 by giving symbolisms (Opening of Roofs, From wandering to Journeying, Closed doors but Open wounds). He emphasized on the Kingdom of God as not distant to people, but of one heart and soul. And as a one community of God, everyone is invited to embrace God’s mission.

The Closing Eucharistic Celebration was led by Most Rev. Salvatore Rino Fisichella. After then, a solemn community reflection was done to sum up the three-day event of love and communion with the Lord.
