The College of Teacher Education (CoTEd) held its 13th Pinning, Candle-lighting, and Sending off Ceremony on July 28, 2017 at SHC Chapel. This year’s theme was “Cordian Educators: Thinking Globally, Acting Locally”. The event kicked off with a Eucharistic celebration led by the chaplain of the Higher Education Department, Rev. Fr. Bryan Cabrera who emphasized in his homily that the future educators should think and act in communion with the Lord, with the church, and with their fellow Filipinos. He further reminded the pre-service teachers to always adhere to the values taught by Sacred Heart College, its founder – Hermana Fausta Labrador and patron saints – Saint Vincent de Paul and Saint Louise de Marillac, the values of simplicity, humility and charity.

Mr. Joel A. Boragay, pianist and Jinno Labitigan, violinist, provided music during the Eucharistic Celebration.

During the second part of the event, Dr. Maria Lucila M. Baroro, the Vice-President for Student Development Well-being and External Linkages and a fulltime college faculty member delivered the Introduction. Dr. Leonora Y. Paleracio, dean of CoTEd, presented the sixteen (16) Bachelor in Elementary Education students and thirty-five (35) Bachelor in Secondary Education students who will undergo practice teaching this school year.

Sr. Josefina R. Quiachon D.C, led the lighting of the candle, passed it on to Dr. Luzviminda G. Calzado, Vice-President for Academics, then to the CoTEd faculty members who individually uttered a short prayer for the pre-service teachers as part of the sending-off ceremony. In her message to the pre-service teachers, Sr. Quiachon shared important lessons from the story of the Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery focusing on what is essential in this world quoting one of the famous lines from the novel: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye”. She then encouraged the pre-service teachers to think instinctively, using their hearts which is the only way to discover what really matters. She also highlighted Pope John Paul’s message about giving: “Nobody is so poor that he has nothing to give, and nobody is so rich that he has nothing to receive.”

Derrick A. Balbarosa delivered the response on behalf of the pre-service teachers. Armelette Mae S. Mercurio led the Teacher’s Prayer. Maria Janah I. Inojosa, former President of the College of Teacher Education expressed the message of gratitude on behalf of their batch. Miss Inojosa emphasized in her message the valuable contributions of significant persons to their formation as individuals. She expressed her thanks to the School President, Daughters of Charity, school administrators, faculty members, parents and guardians, fellow Education students and to God Almighty.

The momentous celebration ended with a tribute to the parents as the pre-service teachers offered them flowers while singing Southborder’s “Rainbow”, the theme song of this year’s batch of future Cordian educators.

Mrs. Jennifer R. Malelang, faculty member of the College of Teacher Education emceed the event.
