PRESIDENTSí SUMMIT 2014

The Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) hosted the first Presidentsí Summit at SMX Taguig Convention Center on August 15, 2014. The Summit successfully brought the more than 1,000 countryís presidents and administrators to Manila and discussed the Philippine Higher Educational System . The summit ratified the Manila Declaration on Philippine Higher Education which focused on five-agenda, namely:

a. Creating Higher Quality programs and improving Faculty Development;

b. Building Academe-Industry Linkages;

c. Rationalizing and Developing Research;

d. Funding Post-Secondary Education;

e. Governing Philippine Education;

f. Supporting the K-12 Reform.

Likewise, the participants were treated with more information from great speakers: AnantAgarwal, CEO of edX, an online learning founded by Harvard University and the Massachusettes Institute of Technology (MIT) shared his experiences in reaching out to 155,000 students from 162 countries through online learning. When asked about the attributes of online students, he expressed to succeed , they should be comfortable in online video and highly motivated and self-directed.

Richard Gerver who was awarded the title of Business Speaker of the Year emphasized that the 21st and 22nd century skills that should be developed among the young people today is the collaborating skills and the ability to understand how to learn for themselves . It is important that teachers should empower the young people to create their vision to change the future of the humanity and establish the closer links between the world of work and education.

Based on the agenda, the undersigned sees the importance of taking the initiative in developing public-private partnerships for research to strengthen the institutionís research capabilities and to create a research portal to allow and encourage the students and faculty to share information.

Among the faculty and administrators who represented the President, Sr. Josefina R. Quiachon, DC in the said summit were : Dr. Raquel R. Sena, Mr. Arnel Cadelina, Mrs. Amelia C. Vargas, Mr. Rustom Alvarez and Dr. Josefina M. Parentela.
