SHC Holds the 1st Undergraduate Research Colloquium in Communication and Social Work

Cordians proved that their researches are really worth sharing to the public with their 1st Undergraduate Research Colloquium in Communication and Social Work organized by the College of Liberal Arts and College of Social Work held last August 16, 2014 at the Audiovisual Room of Sacred Heart College (SHC).

The colloquium was formally opened by an inspiring prayer sung by Kath Bonecile, 2014 Cordian Got the Golden Voice Champion. The Dean of the College of the Social Work, Dr. Josefina M. Parantela, welcomed the participants and presenters by emphasizing that “the colloquium is just the beginning of the Cordian researchers’ boundless future.” Her words of wisdom and encouragement challenged the participants and gave hope for a research culture slowly being built among SHC undergraduate students.

For the College of Liberal Arts, four student researchers presented their studies. Jhoana Mae Garcia started the oral presentation with their group’s research on the “Pretesting of the Public Service Announcement, The Bullied Are You?for the Promotion of Cyberbullying Awareness Among Grade 10 Students of Sacred Heart College, Lucena City” which bagged the Third Place. The second presenter was Hanna Desembrana with their group’s research on “A Formative Research on the Enhanced Promotion of SHC Academic Programs for SY 2013 to 2015” which won First Place. Meanwhile, a study focused on the “Competency and Employability Skills of SHC AB Communication Graduates from 2009 to 2012” conducted by an individual student researcher, Janina Formaran, which tied in the Third Place with the study of Shiela Monteverde’s group on the “Analysis of ICT Needs of AB Communication Programs in SHC.” Judges for the AB Communication oral presentations were Ms. Grace Almazan, Mr. Emmanuel Manga and Dr. Luzviminda Calzado.

The College of Social Work had six presenters, started by Arah Alindogan with their research entitled, “Challenges and Coping Strategies of Street Children in Lucena City,” that got Second Place. It was followed by Harlie Reforma who presented the “Analysis on the Delivery of Social Services to the Badjaos in Brgy. Dalahican, Lucena City.” On the other hand, the group of Melvin Abel presented the “Level of Awareness of Senior Citizens in Brgy. Gulang-Gulang, Lucena City in Availing Medicine Discounts.”From the Sisters’ community, Sr. Cecille Saclo D.C., won the Third Place with her research entitled, “Analysis of the Hierarchy of Values of Parent-Beneficiaries of Munting Paaralan ni Hermana Fausta.”

Thirty-five Social Work Graduates were all employed according to the study titled “Competency Level on Social Practice of Social work graduates of Sacred Heart College from 2010-2013,” a research conducted by Katherine Bonecile’s group. The First Place for the Social Work research was bagged by the group of Erica Calub with their study on the “Effectiveness of the Sponsor-A-Grandparent Program by the Hermana Fausta Development Center.” Judges for the Social Work oral presentations were Mrs. Adela Goniea, Mr. Rustum Alvarez and Mrs. Agatha Ilagan.

Simultaneously, 11 research poster presentations were exhibited along the corridor of Hemana Fausta Hall. Winners for AB Communication poster presentations were Sheila Monteverde’s group in the First Place, Janina Formaran, in the Second Place and Jhoana Mae Garcia’s group in the Third Place. Meanwhile, the College of Social Work poster presentation winners were Melvin Abel’s group in the First Place, Arah Alindogan, in the Second Place and Harlie Reforma in the Third Place.

The research colloquium ended up with a closing remark of Dr. Arcelita D. Llanora, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, General and Teacher Education, congratulating the Cordians with their showcase of their skills not only in oral presentation but also in poster presentation. The activity is a proof of the well-roundedness of the Cordians, from talent expositions to academic undertakings like the research colloquium.
