Cyber Cordians take part in the 15th Y4IT

The students of College of Computer Science of Sacred Heart College (SHC) joined the thousands of delegates all over the Philippines on the third day of the 3-day annual Youth Congress on Information Technology-(Y4iT) with the theme “Engineer a Better Future” at SMX Convention Center Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City last September 7, 2017.

Y4IT is an annual biggest IT gathering event that is currently on its 15th year and is a flagship project of the UP System Information Technology Foundation (UPSIT) which primarily gathers IT students, professionals, educators, IT experts and enthusiasts. The event aims to inspire the youth to recognize their potential as game changers in the IT industry. The Cyber Cordians and other delegates from other schools got lucky to hear about the latest technologies, trends, and breakthroughs from the best minds in IT locally and internationally.

The morning session was filled with interesting talks from the following IT experts like Michie Ang, the Director of “Women Who Code Manila” (WWCodeManila), who encouraged and inspired the women delegates to excel in their careers in IT. The 2nd speaker, Mr. Sam Harris, an Education Program Manager, posed a challenge to the community of young IT enthusiasts to engineer their future by enhancing their skills especially in one of the latest trends in IT, Cloud Computing. Fred Chua, President of My3D Concepts Corporation (3D2GO), showed the prosthetic application of 3D printing to open the mind of the audience in 3D printing revolution.

Dr. Prae Seributra, the fourth speaker, shared her expertise on Developing Innovation Skills through Project Based Learning. She emphasized that "Mindfulness, empathy, and compassion skills are vital to building a peaceful society".

Ms. Joan Magno, a Senior Product Manager of Kalibrr, discussed the essentials of creating and crafting a well-designed app. She ended the morning session by challenging the participants to “Be snappy, be steady, and be simple.”

Mr. Bernard Alan Racoma, an IT Officer II in UP NOAH, gave the first talk in the afternoon. He shared valuable insights on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management through digital solutions. He also introduced the NOAH app.

Mr. Billy Cheon, head of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Seoul, was the 2nd speaker who encouraged the delegates to participate in designing better internet. Connecting to Mr. Cheon’s topic, Mr. Albert Dela Cruz, the Managing Director of RIGELTECH Corporation shared on the state of information security and privacy in the Philippines.

Chezka Monica Fermin, Y4iT Research Summit’s Best Research Paper awardee from Bataan Peninsula State University, shared the highlights of her group’s thesis project ARPhanum, an Interactive Alphanumeric Learning Educational Application using Augmented Reality and Privacy.

Another interesting topic was shared by Marie Jude Bendiola, the last speaker of the Y4iT 2017. She is a Communication Researcher from Philips Universität Marburg. She talked about the Understanding of Immigration in the Time of the Internet from a U.S.—American global perspective.

The afternoon’s session of sharing gainful insights on Information Technology ended with fun-filled surprises like raffle draw and live performances from a local band known as Never The Stranger (NTS).

Having started with only 3,000 delegates on its first year until it reached the record breaking – 24,000 attendees, Y4iT’s goal proves to be beneficial to its participants especially the IT students and enthusiasts including SHC’s Cyber Cordians.
