SLB Team Speaks at 9th Young Leaders Congress

Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB) team talked during the 9th Young Leaders Congress (YLC) held at Sacred Heart College (SHC) Audio-Visual Room, July 29.

Young leaders of SHC together with representatives from other schools assembled for the 9th YLC. “When we serve others we always fill it with love”, Ms. Maria Lucila M. Baroro the Vice-President of Student Development/Well-being & External Linkages stated through her welcome remarks. She also discussed the background and contextualization of the Young Leaders Congress in SHC this year with 98 participants. The YLC started as a forum last September 2007. “Meet and connect with other people” said Ms. Baroro as she ended her welcome remarks. She also talked about the theme which is “Empowering Compassion and Mercy to the Young in Discovering the True Beat of Leadership (Best Effort, Attitude and Team)”.

Mr. Rey C. Rodil, coordinator of the Campus Ministry introduced the resource speakers and the participants coming from the two different schools in Lucena City: the Philippine Tong Ho Institute and the Lucena City National High School. Both speakers came from the Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB), a Socio-Political Apostolate of the Society of Jesus in the Philippines.

The Advocacy team leader for Good Governance, Ms. Cecille Marie M. Turrecha was the first one who spoke and afterwards gave an activity to the participants. The activity was called “who am I” where the students have to draw an object that represents themselves. “It is important for us to know our values, the choices we make and to know our ground”, Ms. Turrecha said when she explained the significance of the activity. In addition, she stated that knowing one’s self is an ongoing process.

“We are not just an individual walking in the street, we are community”, Mr. Miguel Karlo L. Abadines, Advocacy Program Officer for Good Governance and handle all electoral engagements and programs of SLB said during his talk. He distinguished the difference between pity and compassion. “The challenge for us is to respond with love” he added as he continue his inspiring talked with the youth. “I am who I am because of who we are” was one of the meaningful statement that Mr. Abadines shared during the seminar.

Various activities and discussion was given to the young leaders, like being a servant leader, how to respond into a broken world, the values and principles of a leader and an action plan activity where the group of leaders have to choose an issue and think of the possible solution for it. The speakers together with Mrs. Ana Libabel U. Ferreras, MSN, Director, Student Activities/Development and Discipline and Mr. Rey C. Rodil, gave their opinion about the action plan of each group. The presenters also showed some inspirational video clips that touched the heart of the participants, one of which was the issue of indigenous people’s lives in Casiguran, dubbed as the APECO project.

Giving of certificates to the speakers and to Mr. Rodil was done before the closing ritual. Putting up of the action plan of each group on the floor together with their hand-stamps signifying their commitment to pursue the common goal, served as the end of this one day Young Leaders Congress seminar.

The masters of ceremony were Ms. Camille Rae Profugo, the Student Executive Council (SEC) P.R.O and Mr. Kris Amiel Cayabyab, the SEC Auditor.
