Eighteen AB Communication students of Sacred Heart College (SHC), Lucena City, with their program head, Dr. Maria Zorayda A. Torres and faculty, Mr. Earl B. Gicana, participated in the 17th EdukCircle Convention on Media Communication held at the AFP Theater, Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City last October 5, 2019. Being regular participants since 2010, the ABComm group convened with communication students from different colleges and universities nationwide for the advancement and essential evaluation of communication practices in communication. It also promotes wider educator and student interest in communication. Highlights of the event include seminars on news coverage and news reporting, the 10th EdukCircle Documentary Competition and the 9thEdukCircle Awards.
Convention speakers include renowned media practitioners in the country, namely, Ms. Pia Arcangel (News Anchor/Host, GMA 7), Ms. Ruth Cabal (News Anchor, CNN Philippines, Ms. Mariz Umali (News Producer/Host, GMA) and Mr. Raffy Tima (News Anchor/ GMA 7). Round table discussions cum open forum with the audience were held after each talk to allow for clarification, comments and feedback.
The 10th EdukCircle Documentary Competition showcased the non-thematic video documentaries of 11 participating schools in the country. SHC’s entry, “Habilin,” revolved around the story about the hardship faced by a gravedigger woman and how the cemetary slowly became her paradise. Three remarkable entries were awarded best this 2019, as follows: “Kahirapan Hanggang sa Huling Hantungan’ by the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila with the Bronze Award, “Gulong” by University of Perpetual Help System DALTA-Calamba with the Silver Award, and “Panaghoy sa Selda” by Lyceum of the Philippines University-Laguna with the Gold Award.
Meanwhile, the 9th EdukCircle Awards recognized notable performances of different personalities in film, television and even music. The awardees were Luis Manzano (Best Game Show Host and Hall of Fame Award), Alden Richards (Most Influential Male Celebrity Endorser of the Year), Eula Valdez (Year’s Best Supporting Actress), Albert Martinez (Best Supporting Actor), Toni Gonzaga (Best Female Reality Show Host) and Atom Araullo (Best Documentary Journalist).
